National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health Visits MTRH.
The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health led by Vice Chair Hon. Joshua Kutuny hailed Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH)for the work it is doing as a Centre of Excellence in healthcare provision, training and research.
MTRH CEO Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, MBS, who together with MTRH Board Chairman Hon. Joseph K. Lagat hosted the Parliamemtary Committee on Health presented the Hospital’s expenditure breakdown of the COVID 19 funds and other allocations including the openness and transparency in execution of National and International tender procurement processes.
The Committee members were briefed on MTRH’s role during the COVID-19 Pandemic as a Response Coordinating Center for the nucleus NOREB Counties as well as entire Western Kenya Region covering 22 Counties.
The lawmakers also witnessed firsthand the high number of renal patients from Homabay, Bondo, Nyandarua and other Counties who utilize the services of MTRH’s Renal Unit.
Members of the committee pledged to lobby for more allocation to MTRH for capital projects to support Radiotherapy Unit, Haemodialysis Services as well as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Personnel Emoluments.
The Parliamentary Committee toured; Renal Dialysis Centre, Hemato-Oncology Directorate (Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy Units), Eye Unit (VacStation use), old Main Laboratory, Biosafety Laboratory (BSL II), Supply Chain Management and AMPATH Laboratory.
Some of the challenges highlighted by the Hospital Management included getting VAT exemptions for proposed the 62-bed Harry J. Dyer Burns Hospital and the 160-bed Julie Anne Parry Paediatric Cancer Hospital; getting reimbursement on the waivers and exemptions for patients who have been unable to pay their bills; importation of Abbot & Roche machine compatible COVID-19 test kits to boost the Hospital’s testing capacity and accessing further funding to allow the absorption of staff brought on contract terms to assist in management of COVID-19 Pandemic.
