Mosop MP to table bill seeking to increase schools sports capitation.
Mosop Mp Abraham Kirwa wants the National Government to fund extracurricular activities in schools to support learners’ sports and athletic talents.
He said primary schools in Kenya grappling with shortage of capitation money to facilitate games activities thus stifled the development of sportsmanship among the children in schools.
Speaking during the homecoming ceremony of the primary schools’ pupils participating in East African junior championship in Rwanda, Mp Kirwa claimed that he will initiate a bill that will obligate the government to allocate more capitation to schools to particularly facilitate sports activities.
”There is an urgent need for the government to support budding talents in schools but there is a shortage of facilities to nurture young talents. The sports industry in the learning institutions has been overlooked for years and it should be integrated with the Competency based Curriculum model of education,” he stated.
Noting that extracurricular events offer opportunities for the learners to showcase their talents outside classrooms, the first term legislator said it’s also a breeding ground for upcoming athletic champions that will fly Kenya’s flag in the international competitions.
“The Mps are forced to use NG-CDF to facilitate school tournaments or sponsor students participating in competitions at international level. But the bill will provide a kitty to fund sport activities and procurement of the training equipment in the schools,” said Mp Kirwa.
