Elgeyo Marakwet MP wants disaster funds used to assist those affected by heavy downpour.
Elgeiyo Marakwet Woman Rep Jane Chebaibai wants the government to fully utilize funds set aside for disaster relief and emergency services to assist people affected by severe floods, mudslides and landslides caused by heavy rains across the country.
Speaking after visiting Kimoloi Primary School where the roof was blown away following heavy downpour in Keiyo, Chebaibai accompanied Soy South ward representative Jonah Tanui said the government need to use the funds to provide food, shelter and health services for the affected residents in the hardest hit areas.
“I call upon the Government to take immediate action since the heavy downpour have caused destruction and damage of houses, schools, lands, roads and bridges leaving residents homeless “she said
The County MP asked the education sector to ensure that, the roofs of the affected schools are in good condition, with Mr. Tanui urging the residents to move to safer areas and to avoid crossing flooded rivers.
This comes after about 175 families in Keiyo North affected following a landslide in Kapchelal area last week where they were forced to camp at Kapyaikor Primary school in Elgeiyo Marakwet County.
Former Emsoo MCA Christopher Cheboiboch urged the government to consider a permanent solution to landslides problem and in particularly the need to move citizens to safer places and to plant trees in such areas.
