Elgeyo Marakwet DG’s promise to Saccos should he win August 9, elections.
Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy governor Wesley Rotich has said that he will approve the Cooperative Society Development Bill 2019 should he be elected the next Elgeiyo Marakwet Governor.
Rotich said the bill will see more funds allocated to cooperative societies in the County which will enable them to grow even more.
“The Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly recently passed the cooperative Society Development bill 2019, my first assignment in office is to assent it into law, the bill will ensure that cooperative societies get more funds,” DG said.
The Elgeiyo Marakwet Gubernatorial candidate further stated that, the approval of the bill will see that 2.5 percent of Ward Development fund is moved to cooperative societies which he said will be a revolving fund which members can borrow a loan at a low interest.
“It will be a revolving fund where members can borrow at low cost and it will also be mandatory for residents to join saccos since it will be for their own good,” he added.
He expressed concern over the membership of cooperative societies saying that high percentage of Sacco members are 60 years and older urging youths to join Saccos for the betterment of their future since it is the only way youths can get funds to start their businesses.
“Cooperative movement is one of the easiest ways of getting government financial support that will help youths start a business and earn a living. By coming together, cooperatives pull resources together hence increasing the working capital of the societies and also you can get products at a cheaper price,” Rotich noted
He says CRA shows that Elgeiyo Marakwet County which has over 170 cooperatives movements, is the fastest growing economy with a GDP of more than 145 billion shillings up from 40 billion courtesy of cooperative movements.
Rotich will face National Vision Party’s Anthony Chelimo and an independent candidate Moses Changwony who were both cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to vie for the seat.
The candidates are in the race to replace the outgoing Governor Alex Tolgos, who is eyeing the County’s Senatorial seat.
