Investigate officers at Eldoret Central police, wrongfully arrested man asks IPOA.
A man who was allegedly arrested and later released by police at his home in Cheptiret, Uasin Gishu County, has asked Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to probe his wrongful arrest.
Sammy Yego claimed police from Eldoret Central station arrested him while in a banking hall and took him to a cell where he was restrained and later released.
Yego claimed he had not committed any crime and accused the officers of attempting to extort from him.
“I was arrested and released later without being told the offense I had committed,” alleged Yego.
He said the officers took him to Cheptiret police station where he was set free.
“I perceive the wrongful arrest as a failed plan to rob me of the money I was planning to withdraw,” he said.
Yego threatened to sue the officers for infringing on his rights.
Centre Against Torture based in Eldoret said IPOA should investigate the matter.
“Complaints of robbery in Eldoret has risen and the said officers could be culpable,” said Kimutai Kirui, an officer at the centre.
