It was a sigh of relief for the tenants at one of the residential houses in Maili Nne estate on the outskirts of Eldoret town after the owner of the houses waived 50 per cent of their rent for the next three months.
According to the landlady Rachael John, the decision was reached following effects that have been caused by the Coronavirus pandemic adding that most of them have no source of income at the moment.
The landlady who is also a businesswoman said should the pandemic go beyond three months, her tenants will still pay half the rent they have been paying until the situation is over.
“50 percent rent cut might even be extended. I decided to chip in to ease the burden on my tenants whom most of them their businesses have been devastated by the corona virus crisis” she said
The tenants who could not hide their joy applauded the landlady for showing generocity and humanity. They called upon others to take similar step especially during this difficult time.
Most of them are traders who said they have been affected economically especially after the shut down of West Market where they have been depending on for their daily earnings.
The tenants who said the landlady’s gesture came in handy, narrated how they received the news in excitement as they were overstretched by the hard economic times experienced in the country due to covid-19 pandemic.
Tenants living at the residential houses pay from as low as Sh3,500 per month to Sh7,000.
