Call for protection of journalists as the world marks World Press Freedom Day
As the World Freedom Day is celebrated across the globe, media stakeholders in Nandi County have called upon the government to promote security of journalists.
Journalists claim that they were facing threats and intimidations in their line of duty, a matter that required intervention of the state.
In an exclusive interview with some Nandi based journalists, it emerged that coverage of corruption and misuse of public resources was being threatened by blackmail and intimidation of reporters.
“Globally media has played a key role in developing and promoting continental diplomatic relation as far as political and economic affairs,” Edward Kosut, The Standard correspondent.
The journalists said that media is a fundamental institution which is supposed to be supported by all sectors.
“On this world press freedom day, I’ll like to urge everyone to reflect on the role of the Kenyan media and journalists in informing the public to make informed decisions. The right to freedom of expression, access to information and free but responsible media are fundamental principles that each of us must stand for and support,” pointed Beth Abuya, the KNA correspondent.
“As we mark this great day which of significance globally, freedom of the press, freedom of expression and the right of access to information are vital if the media are to be able to perform their watchdog function in a democratic society governed by the rule of law; this ought to be respected by both governments” posed Isaiah.
Nandi County Assembly Speaker Joshua Kiptoo also lauded the role of the media saying reporters were going an extra mile to investigate and provide accurate information.
“Government needs to step up and protect the journalist. If not for the media the residents will not know what is going on, it is a noble profession but with a lot of risk. I advise government to protect the media as they carry out their duties,” said Kiptoo.
