More measures enhanced to curb ilicit alcohol in Nandi.
Over 400 wines and spirit shops and bar’s in Nandi County have been denied license to operate as the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drugs Abuse (NACADA) zeroes in the market centers in the community.
The NACADA commenced the crackdown of noncompliant business entities which are claimed to be fertile ground for counterfeit alcoholic products that are not safe for human consumption.
Speaking on April 20th at Kapsabet town, the multi agency team led by the director for NACADA, Elijah Lagat, revealed that only 301 wines and spirit retail shops are certified and licensed and claimed that the operation has been launched to stem out unscrupulous traders.
“We are going for the culprits and rogue traders peddling alcoholic drinks and bringing them to books. We have found that some alcoholic drinks are sold to unsuspecting revelers which have adversely affected their health and social life,” he stated.
Following the recent death of two people after consuming the poisonous alcoholic drinks in Nandi South, Mr Lagat claimed that the agency will work with the police, provisional administration and the county leadership will lead the anti-illicit brew campaigns and those found responsible will face the wrath of the law.
The alcohol drinks and bars found within the learning institutions have been served notice of suspension of their operation licenses and the proprietors have been ordered to close down their businesses.
“We have received cases where the students are engaged in drug abuse with access from the nearby shops. And therefore, the learners have dropped out of the schools due to addiction and even cause parental negligence in the families,” said Mr Lagat, calling upon the parents to play a key role in their families to protect children against alcoholism menace.
