‘Fimbo ya Nyayo’: Gideon Moi inherits his father’s famous rungu.

Senator Gideon Moi has taken over the political leadership of Mzee Moi’s family after his elder brother Raymond handed over the symbolic rungu to him.

A representative from the extended family said after discussions they unanimously agreed to hand over the mantle to the surviving elder son Raymond Moi.

Moi’s firstborn son Jonathan Moi succumbed to cancer last year.

According to the Kalenjin elders, the passing of Moi had left a vacuum that has to be filled by appointing the eldest surviving son to carry on Moi’s political legacy.

While receiving the iconic rungu, Raymond acknowledged that he was the eldest in the family but politically his youngest brother Gideon was more superior politically.

“In terms of seniority, I am the leader of this family but politically, I will let Gideon hold that,” said Raymond.

He made light of the moment when he warned Gideon to fly KANU’s flag high and strengthen the party as per their father’s wishes failure to which he will unseat him.

Gideon Moi was speechless when Raymond who is the Rongai MP passed on the baton to him with the blessings of the elders.

The surprised legislator reacted to the family’s move saying he had not anticipated being handed the rungu, as he lacked the words to describe what it feels like to be the custodian of Mzee Moi’s political baton.

“I was not expecting this. I will do my best and seek God’s guidance” he said.

Gideon expressed gratitude to his family and the Kalenjin community.

Raymond asked Gideon to revive Kanu and make it more vibrant as it was during the Moi era saying the party acknowledges the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

“Just like Raila Odinga has said, we are behind you and behind President Uhuru Kenyatta. They are trying to create a better Kenya for all of us,” he said.
