WhatsApp group chats are now a common feature for WhatsApp users who want to organise a holiday, a meal or just keep in touch with friends who are miles apart but for Nandi youths it has turn out to be an empowerment avenue.
A section of Nandi youths have created an awe inspiring tale by converting a WhatsApp group into a Savings and Credit Co-operative Society Limited aimed at empowering members economically.
The group known as Maskani WhatsApp Group was officially converted into Maskani 029 Sacco as a result of a deliberation held during the second annivesary of the WhatsApp group.
According to the Sacco interim Secretary Mr. Dickson Tanui the group members sought to deviate from the culture of politicking every now and then that has engulfed the social media platforms across the country.
“We want to have shares in the Sacco which can change our lives since we can earn dividends and access loans that can enable us venture into businesses.” said Mr. Tanui
Mr. Tanui said the Sacco objective is to pool savings for the members and in turn provide them with credit facilities as well as an avenue to tap Youth funds like Uwezo and Affirmative Action fund.
“With Maskani 029 Sacco, our living standards shall be improved, I am appealing to youths and other like minded residents of Nandi to be part of history and join the Sacco” said Tanui noting that under the Sacco members are set to benefit from loans at reasonable and concessional interest rates and dividends depending on the profits made and respective members savings.
He further said they are getting prepared to having an immense launch of Sacco and called on the local leadership to support the initiative adding that they hope to make the sacco bigger. The Sacco currently has 256 members.
The Maskani 029 Sacco received its certificate of registration last week and it intends to have the first general meeting in the next 30 days in accordance with the cooperative societies Act.
