West Pokot county doctors perform first successful brain surgery.

When Marvin Odhiambo was wheeled into the theatre room at Kapenguria County Referral Hospital to undergo brain surgery, he just said a silent prayer for he was unable to speak.

Odhiambo woke up to his boda boda business at Chebereria centre when an oncoming vehicle rammed onto him, leaving a crack on his skull and blood leaking into his brain matter, posing a serious threat to his life.

Upon arrival at the hospital on Monday, July 2, the county consultant Surgeon David Karuri Maina advised Odhiambo needed to undergo an emergency brain surgery to save his life.

The exercise involved an operation to remove a blood clot which was beginning to accumulate.

“It was necessary to conduct an emergency surgery to save his life. And this is the fist brain operation to be done in West Pokot county. The county government facilitated my team,” noted Maina.

The consultant however decried lack of modern equipment in most government-owned health facilities.

Area Governor John Lenyangapuo congratulated the medics for the breakthrough even as the county received two Cuban doctors on Wednesday, July 4.
