The ten days national menengitis A vaccination campaign has been officially launched at the Lodwar County Referral Hospital.
The launch was presided by the head of disease surveillance at the national ministry of health Dr. Daniel Langat who commended the county ministry of health for improving the percentage of fully immunised child from 20% to 86%.
Dr. Langat was representing the cabinet secretary for health Hon. Sicily kariuki as the guest of honor
During the launch, Dr Langat noted that menengitis was a serious infection of the lining of the brain and the spinal cord associated with up to 50% fatality.
Available statistics on the disease indicates that the highest burden lies in the menengitis belt running from senegal West Africa to Ethiopia in East africa
An assessment conducted by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with World Health Organization disclosed that Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, West Pokot and Turkana Counties fall in the menengitis belt and are the highest risk of transmission
He stated that the ministry was working on the recommendation of WHO as the most effective strategy for preventing menengitis disease
The launch was also attended by County Commissioner Wambua Muthama Deputy County Secretary Robert loyelei, CECM for Health Jane Ajele and Chief Officer for Dr Roberts Abok WHO, UNICEF and UNOPs we’re also represented
The county received one vehicle, a number of motorcycles and solar powered fridges as tools for conducting the countywide immunization exercise
Turkana was allocated a target of 1 million people as the entire exercise intends to reach a total of 3.1 million persons in the five vaccinating counties of Wajir, Mandera, West pokot and Marsabit
The vaccination targets all persons of age 1 to 29 and is free of charge in all the vaccinating facilities in Turkana.
