Nandi senator Samson Cherargei appeals to the national government exempt donations from being taxed.
Speaking in Chepterit on Sunday while presiding over a fundraiser, the legislator attributed hefty taxes to be undermining humanitarian initiatives funded by non governmental orginazations (NGO) in the country.
He noted that donors including international institutions and churches have been finding it hard to present their donations to the vulnerable groups of citizens due to exploitative financial policies Imposed by the government.
“For years donors have no confidence with government officials over the management and distribution of donations, thus the well wishers have shunned away from offering financial support to Kenyans . This must be taken seriously enhance empowerment and community developments,” he
Urged.
Senator Cherargei’s remarks came shortly after the prolonged stand-off between the government and US-aide over the taxation of donations consignment contained ARV drugs that lasted for months in ports of Mombasa.
“vulnerable persons including people living with disabilities, youths and women have been benefiting through empowerment programs funded by NGOs, and it is our call to the government as leaders to create an economic conducive working environment for the humanitarian bodies,”
