Popular for producing world record holders in athletics, Nandi County is gaining more fame in volleyball.
On sunday the source of champions as the county is often referred hosted an inaugural volleyball tournament.
The tournament according to Kenya Volleyball Federation was the second biggest to be held bragging of 61 participating teams.
During the Nandi County Governors Open Tournament, the General Service Unit and Kenya Prisons teams emerged victorious in their finals at Kapsabet Showground.
In the men’s category, GSU humbled Kenya Prisons in 3-1 win.
Women’s team saw Kenya Prisons floor Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) in 3-1 score.
Both teams took homes cash prize of Sh70,000 courtesy of Nandi Governor Stephen Sang.
The county government sponsored 12 teams to the tournament with plans to host similar events every year.
Speaking to press CEC sports and youth affairs Elly Kurgat confirmed that several youth had been selected to join different institutions and sport training clubs after being selected from the tournament.
” From Last year Kenya Youth Inter county competitions, four of the youth who played volleyball for Nandi County Team have since joined reputable clubs and forces, and we feel encouraged and motivated to continue supporting such tournaments
that they are making sure that the county government is all round in sports,” said Mr Kurgat.
He added, “I want to urge any one in Nandi who has a talent of sports to emerge and as a department we will make sure that we have a better sports person.”
