Nandi county senator Samson Cherargei has petitioned the senate over exploitative gold mining in Nandi County.
In the petition, Cherargei identified grievances faced by miners who are residents of chemase on Tindiret sub-county.
The petition indicates that the prospecting company by the name of Karebe Gold Mining had shortchanged residents by improper land lease, lack of health concerns, pollution, poor remuneration for labour provided and lack of support to the community.
The petitioner claimed that since the company started its mining project, locals have not benefitted.

- Senator Cherargei calls for investigation into alleged human rights violations by a Gold mining company in Chemase.
“The people of Chemase have remained impoverished. The mining has become a curse rather than a blessing,” he said.
He said while the international firm was reaping billions of shillings from the business, locals were sinking deeper into poverty.
“many people have suffered instead of benefing from the mining company. Cherargei lamented.
Further, he argued that locals were misled into leasing their lands at throwaway prices.
“The landowners claimed they leased their lands at a cheaper price, if they had known they could have ventured into farming instead” he said.
Examples include Mzee Cheseret Korir, 70 and Pauline Korir, 52, both locals who regretfully leased their lands to the company.
They urge the government to help them so that the company will compensate them since they have lost a lot.
