Over 1000 girls get free sanitary towels in Nandi.
Over 1000 girls get free sanitary towels in NandiGirls from three secondary schools in Nandi have benefited from free sanitary towels from a foundation run by a transport and logistics company.
SWAT Foundation director Onsase Mark noted that their decision was prompted by the realization that many girls from low income families miss school due to lack of the hygiene materials.
” Our research showed that the girls child is disadvantaged and this sanitary towels drive is meant to keep them in school for them to compete favourably with others”, Onsase added.
The initiative targeted day schools that are situated in the informal urban areas of Nandi whose population depend on the casual labour for their daily income.
“Most of these girls come from very vulnerable families and our aim is to fill the gap “, Mr Onsase observed
Statistics shows that academic progress of many girls is affected by absenteeism as girls from poor backgrounds out of shame fail to attend school.
While receiving the donation,ACK Tegat secondary principal David Korir lauded the efforts of the foundation saying this will have a direct impact on the performance of the girls because it will reduce incidences of absenteeism which is a common occurrence in his institution.
The director of Gender and Social Welfare in Nandi Caroline Lagat welcomed the kind gesture from the SWAT Foundation and urged other organizations to come onboard to make access to education for the girl child a reality in order to spur development in the community
