Opinion: Relief food donated by Mishra to Kesses is abuse if not a curse to Nandi speaking people(Jewel of Kalenjin).
Kesses is one of the six constituency in Uasin gishu county. It’s represented in parliament by Dr Swarup Mishra .it s the wealthiest constituency of all the six constituencies. The leafy suburbs of Eldoret town are in Kesses-Elgon view, Race course, Annex and Out span estates are all located in Kesses constituency .
Relief food donated by Dr Mishra to Kesses resident s have left a great embarrassment to Kitwek nation, particularly Uasin Gishu the food basket of Kenya and beyond. People are asking themselves when did Nandis become paupers? How on earth the jewel of Kalenjin(Nandis) have become beggars? Where did the generosity of Nandi people go to? Where are the Nandi leaders who knows the real culture of Nandi went to? Where did the pride of Nandi faded into?
For those who do not know Kesses constituency has one of the best and unique climatic conditions which makes it suitable for animal and plant breeding. Most of the farms are arable and fertile, due to this they ve been supplying cereals, dairy products and horticulture crops to major towns in Kenya, Eldoret town and it’s environs. It is one of the richest and fertile constituency in terms of resources. Kesses constituency prides itself being the home of over 10 of the current and former Governor s,home of Sudan president Salvar Kiir and besides being residence of who is who in the Republic of Kenya.
Nandis are the original natives of this constituency, they form 80% of the constituents. They have inhabited this land since displacing Maasai during Songoliet war.
For a very long time, Nandi s have been regarded highly by the other Kalenjin speaking dialects because of their withstanding generosity in terms of food. A story has been told of how Nandis once saved extinction of other Kalenjin dialects by offering them shelter and food during times of natural calamities, drought and war.
Tugens, Keiyos,Pokots and Kipsigis trekked all the way to Uasingishu/Nandi land to seek food in a journey dubbed “KISIMET”,they were considered blessed ones and during drought season they could supply food commodities to other people in plenty. They are face of Kalenjin, they are jewel and pride of all Kalenjin sub tribes because of their personality traits.
But all this pride was about to be washed away yesterday, because what was done by Hon Mishra is contrary to cultural beliefs of Nandi and long held belief by the whole world that Nandi s are generous and rich in all sphere s of life.
The leaders have blamed the manner in which the distribution was to be done and the arrogance of the M. P who was caught in a video abusing and publicly spatting unprintable words to Wareng, OCPD.
The swift action by able Governor of Uasin Gishu,H.E Mandago and County commander Mr Jaldesa saved the situation by redeeming the face of community and Uasin gishu county in general.
Finally, It’s a wake up call to Kesses Nandis to rise to the occasion by ensuring that no Neighbor sleep s hungry during this period of Corona. Its upon them to redeem the image of Nandi community and restore the lost glory which was once held by their great grandparents.
