Greenbelt organization is set to recruit over 1, 200 residents in Nandi into forests wetlands conservation program movement.
Following the alarming degradation of the government forests and water towers that have affected accumulatively over 26, 000 acres in the region, the nongovernmental body have started to sensitized locals on the planting of trees as one of the restoration processes.
Speaking to the journalists in Kapsabet, the Greenbelt Deputy executive director in charge of organization’s programs, Mercy Karundito, stated that various government forests including Nandi, Serengonik, Kipsamoite forests are among the earmarked sites the tree seedlings to be grown.
“We have majorly involved the locals living around the wetlands and sensitized them to adopt our tree programs. They will effectively help us to achieve the environmental conservation objectives and get to benefit from the organization’s initiatives,” she stated.
Noting to have partnered with the county government and other community based environment stakeholders, Karundito said that management programs of the forests would be rolled out to allow environment-friendly human activities only.
” We shall focus to on the conservation of the privately owned wetlands in our program. We shall encourage the farmers to grow trees that are economically beneficial to them to spare the green cover on the water sources located in their farms,” she urged
