Nandi: Upcoming athletes shine at AK cross country.
It was a classic case of everyone for himself as athletes raced against time during the second edition of Athletics Kenya Cross Country competition.
The first to cross the finish line in the women’s senior category was the former World Youth 3,000m bronze medalist Sheila Chelangat in 34:25.6 beating Joyce Chepleting (34:28.8) and Gladys Chepkirui 34:42.2 who came second and third respectively.
Chelangat who was representing the National Police said the competition was tough adding that the situation was worsened by the hot sunny weather.
In the men’s category, the former Africa cross country bronze medalist and double silver medalist Charles Yosei emerged victorious in the senior category.
The 5,000m Africa Junior champion Agnes Jebet and upcoming athlete Felix Korir won the women and men junior titles respectively.
The competition was attended by several guests including the university principal Prof Gideon Misoi who applauded Athletics Kenya for sponsoring the event.
“As Koitalel Samoei community we are grateful for supporting us in sports since our niche is sports science and management,” said Prof. Misoi.
Misoi said the university is planning to put up a sports academy which will support their mission of promoting talents in the county known to be the source of champions.
“We are coming up with programs in sports science and in due course those programs will be advertised,” said Misoi.
Governor Stephen sang and his counterpart Governor Jackson Mandago attended the event.
