Winnie Jelimo, a 15-year’s old from Koisolik Village in Nandi county is seeking for justice after the local high schools denied her to join form one due to her albinism nature.
The bright student who sat for her 2020 KCPE and managed to score 347 out of possible 500 marks in Ilula Primary school(Eldoret), Chelimo have been greeted with rejection from the local secondary schools she sort to be admitted.
This has caused her parents to worry about the future of their daughter thus calling for the ministry of education to intervene.
“We have tried to secure a place for her in a number of secondary school but all in vain. Many have said they cannot admit her due to her condition of albinism, this should not be the reason to take away her educational rights,” said Samwell Kipruto. her father.
Jelimo who’s dream is to become a medicine doctor said her ambition would be a long shot if he failed to join a suitable school to her condition.
“ My fellow students have already secured their admissions to join form one. I got letter The Salvation Army Likoni High for the Visual Impaired. I have no visual challenges at all, it was very erroneous,” distraught Jelimo.
Her parents describe her as a hardworking girl and all they could wish is a better learning environment, urging the government to provide her with special school.
“She has always done her best in school and also at home since she was a toddler but today I am confused if indeed the government policy of hundred percent transition is not meant for children with special needs like my own daughter who has skin problem,” Said Chebitok, Chilimo’s mother.
County Education Director in Nandi Dr. Zachary Mutuiri said to have ordered the matter to be addressed by the County Quality assurance officers dismissing the claims of albino discrimination.
“The matter has not been reported but corrections will be made over worng placements. She will be admitted to school that will offer special education for albino,” Said Mutuiri.
