Baringo county Assembly raises alarm on the use of funds set aside to curb Covid-19.

Baringo County Assembly now wants to be fully involved in making decisions related to spending of the 200 million shillings that the County Assembly passed meant for the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Baringo County assembly Clerk Richard Koech in a press statement in Kabarnet argues that the Assembly has been ignored despite the fact that it has a constitutional duty to ensure accountability for the use of public funds and which, in the past, was supposed to be used to carry out different development projects.

Koech said it is regrettable that the County Assembly only monitors the use of the funds in the media and where so far, they have information that 40 million shillings have already been used.

“The County Government led by the department of health services have rolled out programs that are intended to protect the population like issuing them with face masks but the assembly rarely get to participate directly in the implementation of these programs” Says Koech

Koech argues that justice and transparency must be enforced adding that there is a risk that millions of money that have been set aside, as well as for the four major government agendas have been misused.

“We are also aware that there are many sources of these interventions . There are many partners that are coming along now what we want to see is accountability and transparency of what is going on in this country” He said

The County of Baringo early last month set aside Ksh.200 million to counter the COVID-19 pandemic where 70 million of the funds is for food distribution to vulnerable in the community, 31 million for rapid response, 30 million used in water distribution and the rest of the funds to be used in equipping health facilities and setting up of isolation centers.
